History of Angel House Inn

Peace and quiet in the middle of the city

Angel House was built in 1878-1879 by the Hon. James Angel most readily associated with the United Nail and Foundry, one of the many incarnations of the family ironworks that operated from the 1850's until 1982. The Foundry was responsible for many firsts in the province, among them Newfoundland's first steam engine, first steel boiler and first steel-hulled ship.

Angel House was purchased in 1997 from the Angel Family, and was caringly restored and seasonally run as a B&B. Designated a Provincial Heritage Property in 2000, one of the original owners, John O. Buffinga, a self-inspired gardener, beautifully arranged the acre of grounds into various themes and gardens.

The house, recently purchased and renovated, now operates year round as an Inn offering accommodation and event facilities. Through their interests in antiques, history and heritage properties, present co-owners Russell and Patricia bring much to any stay. A documentary filmmaker, Russell spent five years researching, interviewing and filming throughout the province for the three-part series, Vanished in the Mist: The Lost History of Newfoundland , seen on History Television. Patricia brings thirteen years of experience in both the fashion and interior design industries.
